Solar surveillance power planning: questions to ask before deployment

Solar-powered does not mean placement-independent. Ask how the proposed configuration will be supported at your site, particularly when shade, weather, operating schedules and equipment loads change.

Start with the actual location

Walk the proposed position and identify nearby structures, trees, equipment and expected construction that could affect solar exposure. Consider the area needed for the platform and access for service. A location selected only for a useful camera angle may not be the best location for the power arrangement. Ask the provider to reconcile both needs in the deployment plan rather than approving them in separate conversations.

Request a configuration-specific power explanation

Camera selection, communications equipment and other configured functions form part of the operating load. Ask which assumptions were used for the proposed system and what conditions require a change to that plan. Avoid borrowing battery-runtime figures from a different product or installation. The Xnergy sheet describes autonomous solar operation for the Pro and a solar option for the Mini, but does not publish a universal number of days of autonomy. [1]

Define what happens when equipment needs attention

A power plan should identify who monitors equipment health, who receives a warning and who arranges service. Ask how the team distinguishes a camera issue from a power or communications problem. The exact tools and thresholds depend on the configuration, so request an explanation rather than assuming all components report in the same way. Keep the service contact and access procedure with the site’s operating information.

Revisit the assumptions during the project

New buildings, relocated containers or seasonal site use can change the original conditions. Set review points around major physical changes and after a relocation. Confirm that the camera views and the power plan still make sense together. Document the date of the review and any changes made so the next person managing the site understands the current arrangement instead of relying on the original installation notes.

Put it into practice

Your planning checklist

  • Review solar exposure and future obstructions.
  • Confirm the proposed equipment configuration.
  • Ask for site-specific power assumptions and operating limits.
  • Define health-warning and service responsibilities.
  • Recheck the plan after relocation or major site changes.

Find the right Xnergy configuration

Compare Pro solar field operation with the Mini’s optional solar configuration. Ask Xnergy to confirm the selected power package; do not infer battery capacity or runtime from the product name.
